SpareFoot, a self-storage organization, needed to conduct user research and replace outdated user personas and journey maps.
User research
Research started with reviewing the organization website and the storage services offered; personal storage, vehicle storage, and portable storage. A search can be narrowed by filtering amenities such as first floor, 24-hour access, surveillance cameras, and more.
Interview questions were designed with these details in mind; focusing on the user’s situation that required self-storage, what they required, how they found self-storage, what they stored, and why might they end their lease.
I began conducting and transcribing interviews with six individuals who currently have self-storage or used it in the past. The collected data was organized into an Affinity Diagram and the creation of an Empathy Map followed shortly after.
With these insights, I was able to determine that the value of self-storage directly correlates with a user’s immediate lack of space. The majority of users view self-storage as a short-term solution and only use it when it’s absolutely necessary. When obtaining self-storage, users make decisions based on convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness.
Finally, I began designing three User Personas and Journey Maps based on the key discoveries and data points.
